In New Zeland they have a trophy where the teams holds the trophy until they are beaten in any competition. Then the side holds the trophy untilt hey are beaten. We could have the same comption in Scotland.
I have a new idea for a new major rophy that would not increase fixture
congestion and could increase interest in league matches.
How about at the start of each year, the previous year's SPL champions
are given a shield called the Scottish challenge match shield. Then the
team keep the trophy until they are beaten. Which ever team wins gets
to hold the trophy. The trophy would be match challenge going to the
winning team. If a team draws then like the Ryder cup the reigning
champions would keep the trophy. This trophy could run throughout the year,
until the Scottish cup final. This would allow an extra trophy that could
have a sponsor, attract crowds, and yet not increase fixture
congestion. All Scottish competitive game would be counted, for the trophy, in all 2 cups, the SPL, The SFL, and the non league system and the non
league official cups, such as the Aberdeenshire cup, and Highland league
cup. This would allow all sort of teams to win a major trophy. Most years
it would be Celtic, and Rangers but on other years it could be a team
in the third division or
even the Highland league. Obviously the trophy would only be allowed to
be held by Scottish clubs and Berwick. This would be an imaginative
idea that could attract extra sponsors.
In the 2004-5 year for instance Celtic's first Scottish defeat was to
Aberdeen, Aberdeen shortly after lost to Rangers, who were then
eventually beaten by Celtic who's next Scottish defeat was against Rangers in
the league. Rangers were a few weeks ago beaten by Dundee United. So at
present the holders would be Dundee United. It is likely they will lose
in the league to a team in the bottom six so this would an interesting
trophy, that could go to a club in the bottom six. Or Dundee United
might go the rest of the year undefeated. I think this trophy would be a
fun trophy that could attract sponsors and TV audiences. And yet would
cost nothing to organise. And how could clubs object to the trophy were
the only cost would be buying the shield. Imagine the fun that would be
had if a Scottish third division team were about to win a trophy that
was normally won by Celtic and Rangers. Or even if Aberdeen had lost to
a team in the Aberdeenshire cup if the trophy ended up going to a team
in the Highland league.
