Here's a summary of the promotion and relegation places in the English divisions:

Premiership

CHAMPIONS
Arsenal clinched the title on 25 April at the home of neighbours Tottenham - a feat they also achieved in 1971.

The Gunners claimed their 13th league title following a 2-2 draw at Spurs, after Chelsea lost 2-1 at Newcastle.

EUROPEAN QUALIFICATION

Arsenal and Chelsea claimed the automatic Champions League qualification spots, while Manchester United will have to go through the qualifying phase in August.

Liverpool are the favourites to secure fourth place and claim the final Champions League spot - although Aston Villa and Newcastle, are still in with a shout.

Whoever finishes fifth will have the consolation of a Uefa Cup place.

Middlesbrough are already through to the Uefa Cup as winners of the Carling Cup, and Millwall have the FA Cup winners' place because United, their opponents in the final, have their Champions League spot.

There could also be a Uefa Cup place via the Fair Play League - but that remains to be resolved.

DOWN

Leicester were relegated after they drew 2-2 at Charlton and Manchester City secured a home win over Newcastle.

Wolves and Leeds were effectively relegated on the first weekend in May but Leeds were definitively sucked into Division One after a 3-3 draw at home to Charlton on 8 May.

Division One

UP

Norwich, despite losing at Sunderland, clinched the Division One title on Tuesday 4 May after second-placed West Brom lost 4-1 at Stoke.

Nigel Worthington's side had already returned to the top flight after a nine-year absence when Crystal Palace beat Sunderland on 21 April.

West Brom grabbed the other automatic promotion place, while Sunderland's victory ensured a play-off place.

West Ham, Crystal Palace and Ipswich currently occupy the other play-off places but Wigan, Sheffield United and Reading are not mathematically out of the running.

DOWN

Wimbledon were relegated after losing 2-1 to Sunderland on 6 April.

Wimbledon's 3-2 win at Bradford City on 17 April dragged the Bantams down with them.

Walsall will join Wimbledon and Bradford in Division Two next season unless they win their final match of the season and Gillingham's result goes their way.

Division Two

UP

Plymouth were promoted to Division One after beating QPR 2-0 on April 24, returning to the top two divisions for the first time since 1992.

QPR edged out Bristol City for the second automatic place after a 3-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

Bristol City will now have to contend with the play-offs, despite a 2-1 win over Blackpool, and Brighton, Swindon and Hartlepool will join them in the semi-finals.

DOWN

Wycombe's relegation was confirmed after Easter Monday's results (12 April).

Notts County joined them after they lost 2-0 to Port Vale on 24 April.

Grimsby and Rushden and Diamonds were relegated on the final day after defeats against Tranmere and Port Vale respectively.

Division Three

UP

Doncaster were the first English team to be promoted after a 2-0 home win over Cambridge (12 April) and they became champions on 1 May after a goalless draw with Boston.

Hull will join them in Division Two next season after a 2-1 win at Yeovil (1 May).

Huddersfield, who drew 1-1 at Cheltenham on May 8, were pipped by Torquay for the third and final automatic promotion place because the latter beat Southend 2-1.

Huddersfield will join Mansfield, Northampton and Lincoln in the play-offs.

DOWN

Carlisle and York were relegated on 1 May.

A 1-1 draw against Cheltenham was not enough to save Carlisle, while York lost 2-1 against Leyton Orient.

Conference

UP

Chester City secured a return to the Football League by winning the Conference. The Deva Stadium outfit beat Scarborough 1-0 on 17 April with Darryn Stamp getting the winner.

The play-off final will be contested between Aldershot and Shrewsbury at Stoke's Britannia Stadium on Sunday 16 May.

Aldershot beat Hereford 4-2 on penalties after their two legs had ended 1-1 and 0-0 and the Shrews beat Barnet 5-3 on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate score.

RELEGATION FROM CONFERENCE/PROMOTION TO CONFERENCE

Northwich are relegated after a dismal season in the Conference (3 April), while Leigh RMI will join them after a 5-0 defeat by Hereford (17 April).

Farnborough were condemned to the bottom three after losing 2-0 at Gravesend (12 April), but they have been spared from the drop because Hucknall, champions of the Unibond League, do not have a good enough ground for the Conference.

Barrow do have a good enough ground, but needed to finish second in the Unibond in order to claim their place, and have failed to do so.

Crawley Town winners of the Dr Martens Premier Division and Canvey Island, winners of the Ryman League, are promoted to the Conference.
